Where the West Begins
From its frontier origins as a military outpost on the Texas frontier to becoming one of America's fastest-growing major cities, Fort Worth's story is one of resilience, innovation, and Western spirit.
1849Established as a U.S. Army outpost on the banks of the Trinity River, named after General William Jenkins Worth, a hero of the Mexican-American War. The fort was part of a line of frontier defenses protecting settlers moving westward. Though the military abandoned the post in 1853, settlers remained, and the community continued to grow.
1866-1890Over 4 million head of cattle were driven through Fort Worth along the famous Chisholm Trail, earning the city its legendary 'Cowtown' nickname. Cowboys would rest and resupply in Fort Worth before the long drive north to Kansas railheads. The cattle industry transformed Fort Worth from a sleepy frontier town into a booming commercial center.
1876The Texas and Pacific Railway reached Fort Worth, transforming the frontier town into a major commercial hub and cattle shipping center. This marked the end of the long cattle drives, as ranchers could now ship cattle directly by rail. The railroad brought unprecedented growth, new businesses, and cemented Fort Worth's position as a major Texas city.
1893The Fort Worth Stock Yards were officially incorporated, becoming one of the largest livestock markets in the nation. At its peak, the Stockyards processed millions of cattle, hogs, and sheep annually. The complex included packing plants, the famous Livestock Exchange building, and the iconic brick streets that still exist today.
1917Fort Worth became home to military aviation training with the establishment of training facilities during World War I. This laid the groundwork for the city's aerospace industry and eventually Lockheed Martin's major presence. Today, Fort Worth is home to one of the largest defense contractors in the world, continuing its aviation legacy.
TodayFort Worth is the 12th largest city in the United States and consistently ranked among the fastest-growing major metros in America. The city has diversified from its cattle and oil roots into technology, healthcare, aerospace, and finance. Downtown Fort Worth has experienced a renaissance with new developments, world-class museums, and a thriving culinary scene.
